Laurie Martz: Artist Feature
Artist Laurie Martz shares her insights into her current solo show, on display at the Comox Library until November 7th:
'Since moving to the Comox Valley a decade ago after a long career as a physician I am excitedly exploring my right brain and the natural world of home through my abstract paintings. My work morphs through landscape to figures to pure elemental abstract coming from my inner spaces...and back and forth again quite happily, paying minimal attention to the concept of 'style' (which is quite freeing) as external events and internal reflection play out through acrylic paint and mixed media techniques.
Colour, texture, and shape make up the fundamental language I use as I apply paint and collage elements with various tools. I approach the canvas intuitively, initiating with playful mark-making and responding freely to see what arises and then go further. My physical process is an active dialogue of add and subtract; I build up complex layers only to scrape away or cover up removing what is not needed. I repeat this cyclical rhythm until a visual and emotional harmony reveals itself. And then, I step back and breathe!
My art reflects the themes and questions that surround us. Because art is layered in complexity, it is interpreted through a personal filter. People see what they need to see in my abstract forms.
Connection with others through creativity has greatly transformed my own world and expands the possible for one another in the art we make; I deeply hope it will help heal the globe.'
