Volunteer Benefits
The Pearl Ellis Gallery is successful only because of dedicated volunteers. There are many benefits to volunteering at the Gallery. Here's what some volunteers enjoy in their various roles.
Here’s what our volunteers have to say
Gallery Hosts
Nicola O’C
What I enjoy about volunteering at the front desk is the opportunity to feel part of this amazingly artistic community. I am always thrilled whenever I get to meet one of the artists and put a face to a name. Today I sold two paintings and felt absolutely thrilled for both the buyer and the seller!

I feel lucky that I can show my work in a volunteer gallery. So I want to reciprocate by volunteering my time in some way to contribute to making the gallery a vibrant place to be.
Karen H
I enjoy hosting in the gallery as you typically get to find out more about the other artists when they come in. As well, many visitors are from places outside of Comox and often have interesting conversations with us and Matt at the Museum next door.

I’m retired and in some ways I miss the buzz of a workplace. Hosting at the Gallery lets me take on the role for a few hours, enjoying the feeling of pride in a successful group endeavour. Not only that, I get to hang out with a whole range of art pieces, absorbing those influences and ideas. It’s fun and inspiring.

I always enjoy my days hosting at the gallery. Sometimes I get to see old friends and sometimes I meet new visitors who have just discovered our special collections of art. Every new show instigates discussions and gives me a chance to talk about the importance of art in our lives. My favourite part is when I get to inspire others to try a new project or a new technique.
Ann K
It is a good way to build an artist’s network and see how others market their work. It is also fun to talk to visitors about their favourite pieces and why. And then tell them which piece is yours. Awkward moment!
Show Hanger

I really enjoy seeing the art as it comes in and, of course, it is the best opportunity to meet the artists behind the work as well.
Micheal F
I really enjoy meeting other artists and seeing what artwork they want to share.
I especially enjoy meeting artists who are showing for the first time and seeing what they have created.
Art Card Sales Coordinator
Rim S
I enjoy volunteering at the Pearl Ellis Gallery because the artists are passionate about their work and so graciously share their knowledge. I appreciate the gallery board’s eagerness to use several ways to share art and to invite community participation; in turn I witnessed how gratefully and positively members of the community respond to the exhibits. I also find it rewarding to develop friendships with like-minded volunteers.
Poster Delivery Coordinator
Karen H
Being the poster coordinator is mostly about creating an organized system. Once I was able to find volunteers who could commit to being booked ahead in the year, it was relatively straightforward.
I also deliver posters, and enjoy getting out, walking through Comox or Courtenay to various locations. As well, I especially enjoy getting to know each of the members who became part of our poster team by meeting with them at Benino’s Cafe.
Reception-Food
Corinne E
I enjoy volunteering at art receptions because it allows me to be creative (with food!) in a way beyond painting while still staying connected to the arts. Contributing my time helps support the success of the gallery, which is something that matters deeply to me. Being part of these events lets me engage with the artistic community, support fellow artists, and play a role in creating a welcoming and successful experience for visitors, plus it’s just fun!
